Changing university or interrupting studies: your residence case

Review your residence basis and work position when your course, university or student status changes.

A change in your studies can affect the facts supporting your residence application or permit. Changing university, switching study mode, taking a break and being removed from a course are different events. Do not assume they all have the same consequence or require the same response.

Identify exactly what changed

Write down the effective date and obtain a clear document from the institution. Is the change a transfer, a temporary interruption, a new programme, graduation or loss of student status? Is the new course full-time? Is there a gap between the old and new enrolment?

Compare those facts with your current residence decision or pending application. The Foreigners Act and student procedure guidance connect the residence route with its actual purpose. A card’s printed expiry date does not remove the need to review a change in that purpose.

Pending application or issued permit?

Position What to review
Application still pending Which information and evidence must be updated in that case?
Permit already issued Which notification duties and possible further procedure apply?
Old course ended, new course not started What supports residence during the interval?
Moving into employment Does a work-based route better reflect the new purpose?

Have any notification deadline checked as soon as the event occurs. Do not wait for the institution to deal with its own obligations and assume that this also completes yours.

Check work rights again

Work rights can depend on study mode and institution status, or on another independent basis. The Labour Inspectorate’s 2026 information explains why the institution check matters. If your circumstances change, a previous HR assessment may need updating.

See student work rules and study types. A move to a course with a similar name does not necessarily preserve the same exemption.

Documents to collect

  • Current residence decision, card and pending-case details.
  • University confirmation of the event and effective date.
  • New admission or continuation information, if relevant.
  • New course dates, study mode and tuition information.
  • Any effect on insurance, funding or employment.
  • Evidence of correspondence already sent to the authority.

Keep a clear explanation of the sequence. For example, a transfer with uninterrupted full-time studies is factually different from leaving a course and planning to enrol later; the file should not blur that distinction.

If the next step is employment, read residence after graduation. Our student residence team can review the change and explain what further scope is needed.
