Changing jobs with an EU Blue Card in Poland

Check the rules attached to your decision, notification duties and continued eligibility before a Blue Card job change.

An EU Blue Card job change needs an assessment of the actual permit and the applicable version of the rules. Do not copy the procedure for a standard residence-and-work permit, and do not assume that a valid plastic card removes every obligation when employment changes.

Keep the full decision, not only the card. The 2025 amendments contain transitional provisions for older decisions and proceedings. That is why advice given to another Blue Card holder can be inappropriate for your case even when the cards look similar.

Identify the current employer, when the employment ends, when the new job would begin and how the new terms compare with the Blue Card requirements.

Notifications and continued conditions

The current Article 134 of the Foreigners Act provides for written notifications within 15 working days for specified events, including loss of work, change of employer and ceasing to meet the permit requirements. The applicable rules must be checked together with the transitional position of your decision.

A notification and an application to change a decision are not automatically the same action. Have the required procedure identified before sending a generic letter or starting the new job.

Prepare the new employment evidence

  • Full legal name of the new employer.
  • New contract or final proposed terms.
  • Role, duties, remuneration and employment period.
  • Evidence that qualifications match the new work.
  • Dates and evidence of the previous employment ending.
  • Copies and delivery evidence for notifications already made.

If the new role is materially different, reassess the qualification evidence instead of assuming the earlier file proves suitability for every occupation.

If there is a period without work

Unemployment does not have one universal consequence on the first day. The legislation includes protections subject to conditions and the period of Blue Card residence. Those rules do not eliminate notification duties or permit a period of unemployment of any length. Assess the actual dates and history promptly.

Do not use the printed card expiry date as the only date in your plan. A change in the underlying purpose can matter before the physical document expires.

Keep mobility as a separate question

A move to an employer in another EU country involves the destination country’s rules and the relevant mobility route. It is not merely a Polish employer change. Explain any relocation plan at the outset so the assessment addresses the right country and procedure.
