Choose a residence route by how well it fits your actual work and qualifications, not by which card sounds more prestigious. A standard temporary residence and work permit and an EU Blue Card both concern work-related residence, but their conditions and later obligations differ.
Compare the main questions
| Question | Standard work residence | EU Blue Card |
|---|---|---|
| What work is the route designed for? | Employment meeting the conditions of the relevant work-residence procedure | Highly qualified employment meeting Blue Card conditions |
| Does a specific higher salary threshold matter? | Check the remuneration rules for the standard route | Check the Blue Card threshold for the relevant year |
| Are higher qualifications central? | The role and any occupation-specific requirements matter | Evidence of qualifying education or professional experience is central |
| What happens after a job change? | Examine amendment and notification requirements | Examine the Blue Card rules and any transitional provisions |
The Foreigners Act sets the different legal routes. The MOS Blue Card explanation and document guidance help identify the additional evidence needed for that route.
Make the comparison with real documents
Use the proposed contract, job duties, qualification evidence and current residence decision. A salary estimate from a recruitment conversation is less useful than the actual terms. Similarly, a degree title alone may not establish how it relates to the role.
If an employer has changed the offer several times, choose one clear version for the assessment and flag anything still being negotiated. The route should follow the genuine planned work, not an artificially altered job description.
Consider what happens after approval
Ask how a change of employer, loss of work or planned move to another country would be handled. Blue Card mobility is subject to its own conditions; holding a Polish card should not be described as unrestricted permission to take any job throughout the EU.
An older Blue Card may also require a different analysis from a permit under the newer rules. Keep the issue date and legal basis available when asking about a future change.
Do not compare only the expected processing time
Neither service includes a guaranteed decision date. A claim that the Blue Card is always faster ignores the individual file and office. Compare eligibility, evidence, practical obligations and scope of assistance instead.
