EU Blue Card qualifications: degree or professional experience?

Understand the different qualification routes and prepare evidence that connects your education or experience with the proposed job.

A university degree is not the only qualification route recognised in the Polish EU Blue Card framework. Qualifying professional experience can also be relevant, but the duration, level and occupation conditions must be met. A CV alone does not prove every requirement.

The qualification routes

Article 3 of the Foreigners Act distinguishes higher education qualifications from qualifications gained through experience. The education definition refers to higher education lasting at least three years. The experience definition includes a five-year route, and a three-year route within the preceding seven years for occupations covered by the relevant ministerial list. The experience must be comparable in level and relevant to the work in the contract.

Do not apply the shorter experience route to every technical-looking job title. Match the actual occupation to the prescribed category. The 2025 amending legislation is part of the background to these changes.

If you rely on education

Prepare the diploma and information explaining the qualification, institution and duration where needed. Check whether a translation or further evidence of the document’s status is required. A short training certificate and a higher-education qualification should not be described as equivalent merely because both mention the same subject.

For regulated professions, assess the separate authorisation needed to practise. An immigration application does not replace a professional licence.

If you rely on experience

Create a timeline of roles, employers, dates and duties. Then attach evidence that supports those facts. The voivodeship document guidance refers to evidence of professional experience, such as employment documentation; choose documents that establish the substance of the work rather than only a company name.

Evidence question What to clarify
Duration Exact dates and any gaps or overlapping roles
Level Responsibilities and complexity of the work performed
Relevance Connection between prior experience and the proposed job
Authenticity Who issued the evidence and what it actually confirms

If an employer no longer exists or a document is incomplete, explain the issue and identify what other reliable evidence is available. Do not create unsupported employment claims to fill a gap.

Check qualifications alongside the other conditions

Meeting an experience or education definition does not settle salary, employment duration, insurance or residence-admissibility requirements. See the 2026 Blue Card overview for the wider picture.

Our Blue Card service includes review of the employment and qualification evidence together. In the first enquiry, describe your qualification route and proposed role; detailed documents can be provided through the agreed case-handling channel.
